Debbie previously worked as a Residential Care Worker at our Royal Blind School for 15 years before taking on her new role as Community Worker in our Family Wellbeing Team four years ago.

She supports people with their sight loss, and their families who are also impacted by this. Her team take calls, answer emails and webform enquiries, and often go out and do home visits to assess how we can support people with visual impairments.

"There is a great deal of job satisfaction and fulfilment, that individuals and their families no longer feel alone or isolated."

- Debbie

Debbie has worked with Sight Scotland for almost 19 years, previously working as a Residential Care Worker at our Royal Blind School and for the past four years as a Community Worker in the Family Wellbeing Team based in Edinburgh.

"I mainly support people in Edinburgh and the Lothians but do also support people from further afield. I support people with their sight loss and their families who are also impacted by this. I love that I am learning something new every day and I feel inspired by the people I support.

"One of the things I am most proud of was supporting someone who found herself homeless with a new baby and a diagnosis of sight loss during lockdown. The individual initially contacted us about her sight deteriorating but a couple of months later she called back to explain her situation and I just had to help.

"This led to her finally been accepted for a permanent home and she is now actively involved with Sight Scotland and giving something back, so I in turn am incredibly proud of her."
