Julie has worked for Sight Scotland for 25 years, first as a Residential Care Worker and now as Head of Care. She is also Safeguarding Lead for both Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans.

Her job involves having strategic overview of our care services, our nursing service and our afterschool and holiday club Kidscene, to make sure that we have sufficient staff, that they are qualified and registered with the Social Services Council, and that we're compliant with the Care Inspectorate requirements of us.

"Unlike other jobs where you may only see someone for a short period of time, we are normally able to see children, young people and adults over a period of years and see the development that happens with them, which is probably the most rewarding part of the job.”

"After college I applied for a job here in 1989 as a residential care worker. I stayed at that point for about four years doing that job and really enjoyed it. But I wanted to do more in the way of managing, so I went to do some other similar things elsewhere. Then I saw an advert for the Head of Care post here and came back to do that in 1998.”

“In the time that I've been here, we've developed adult services. We only had children's services in the beginning, then started adult services about ten years ago - we're now at five houses at full capacity.  We have also opened Kidscene, our after school and holiday club. Kidscene’s a reverse integration model - we invite mainstream children to be alongside our children here who have vision impairment and some with other disabilities as well.
