Overview

Communication lies at the heart of all learning, and fundamental early communication skills are the building blocks of all other learning. It is therefore essential that learners are supported appropriately to develop these early communication skills in a meaningful and appropriate manner, taking into consideration their Vision Impairment.

Having a vision impairment means many of the traditional methods of gaining these skills are not available – so a different approach is required. Movement communication is a means to interact with and support the development of these early communication skills for learners with Vision Impairment and additional support needs. This technique/interaction style was developed at the Royal Blind School.

Who is this course for?

This training is aimed at parents/carers and professionals working with learners with vision impairment and additional support needs, who are operating at an early developmental stage. Through the use of video analysis, this course supports delegates to gain an understanding of the unique challenges, supports, techniques and environmental factors to consider when working with young learners.

What more can I learn?

This course can be followed up with the ‘Canaan Barrie On-body Sign’ course to give a complete overview of our approach to communication.

Course Overview

Canaan Barrie On-body Signing was developed to make signing, which is a visual means of communication, meaningful and relevant to children with visual impairment and additional support needs.

We will discuss the importance of creating a ‘signing environment’, the benefits of using this method to support the individual’s understanding as well as provide an alternative means of expressive communication.

The different methods of signing (In-front, On-Body and Hands Over) will be discussed and demonstrated, and opportunities to practice the core signs will be provided.

Through the use of video analysis, this course supports delegates to gain an understanding of the benefits and practicalities of using Canaan Barrie On-body Sign. There will be a focus on practicing the signs through a variety of activities, helping delegates to feel more confident in using the signs in their everyday communications with the individuals in their care.
