“My name is Jemima, and Sight Scotland helped me find my superpower.
"I have Bardet-Biedl Syndrome and Retinitis Pigmentosa, which means I can’t see that well and my vision will keep getting worse. I have just started as a student at the Royal National College for the Blind (RNC) in Hereford, but I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t gone to Sight Scotland’s Royal Blind School.
"Their classes in habilitation, drama and mindfulness really helped me to manage my anxiety and imagine a future for myself that I never dreamed possible. The QTVI (Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired) teachers at the school are like gold dust, they understood me and believed in me."
"Before I was at the Royal Blind School, I had been told I would never be able to read braille, but thanks to the teachers at the Royal Blind School, braille became my superpower. I can now read and write again – I love creative writing and expressing myself through poetry. One of my poems has even been published!"
"I found my tribe at the Royal Blind School and I was sad to leave, but I’m really excited for my time at college – I’m excited to learn new things and make new friends. And I know that everything I learned at the Royal Blind School will help me through college and my life afterwards.”
Jemima was one of the fastest learners of braille that staff had ever seen – it really is her superpower!
