Sight Scotland has been empowering children and young people with visual impairments for over 200 years.
The Royal Blind School formed in 1875 and has provided care and educational support ever since.
But the need is growing. There are increasing numbers of children with visual impairment, but there’s less support available to help them. Visual impairment pupil numbers have more than doubled from 2,000 to over 4,000 in the past decade, whilst Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired numbers have decreased.
In this video, Jemima shares how her time at the Royal Blind school changed her life.
Jemima’s visual impairment meant she was struggling in mainstream education. But all this changed when she came to the Royal Blind School and she found her superpower, braille.
Jemima found her superpower, but this transformation didn’t happen by chance — it happened because of specialist support from Sight Scotland.
Across Scotland, thousands of children with visual impairment rely on the same expertise that helped Jemima thrive. Through our Royal Blind School in Edinburgh and our outreach services across Scotland, Sight Scotland’s teachers are helping hundreds of children to access learning, build independence, and believe in themselves.
Specialist education is life-changing — yet it can only continue with your support. Your donation provides expertise, resources, and personalised support that empower children and young people like Jemima to discover their superpowers, and to look confidently to their future.
