The Royal Blind School has been awarded the contract to deliver Orkney Islands Council’s vision impairment education service for the next year.
This builds on the success that the Royal Blind School - in Edinburgh has achieved with delivering specialist education and support to visually impaired pupils in mainstream schools across East Lothian.
Pupils with vision impairment at both primary and high schools in Orkney will benefit from the new service provided by the Royal Blind School. The service will provide a wide range of support to pupils, staff and families in the Orkney Islands.
The key areas of delivery will include: teaching of specialist skills, access to learning through mediums such as braille and large print, assistive technology, guidance for school staff, social skills and transitions.
Peter Diamond, Head of Education at Orkney Islands Council, said: “Orkney Islands Council is committed to developing a strong partnership working with the Royal Blind School to deliver an excellent service that will meet the needs for our children who have a vision impairment.”
Hawys Kilday, Director of Services at Royal Blind said: “We are very much looking forward to delivering vision impairment services for Orkney. We will be working in partnership with our mainstream colleagues in Orkney to help children and young people with a vision impairment to develop and reach their potential.”
The service will be delivered by Qualified Teachers of Vision Impaired Children and other staff who have extensive experience in braille.
