Multi-sensory stories are a great way for people with multiple disabilities and visual impairment to learn and to interact with stories.

This video is an introduction to sensory storytelling.

When storytelling for people with multiple disabilities and/or a visual impairment, we have to work a little harder to bring the story to life for that young person.

Ideally, storytellers should attempt to bring into play all the young person's senses to enable the young person to experience the story.

How to make a sensory story:

A very simple way to make any story multi-sensory is to create a small, basic kit.

For example, for a story about a magnetic banana, you can use:

  • a fresh banana
  • real magnets
  • elements that appear in the story such as a plastic snake and forks and spoons.
