Let's get the message out there
We want to reach more people with sight loss and help improve their lives
Mairi is the Marketing Manager for Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans. Here she answers a few questions about her role.
What job do you do?
I lead the marketing team covering both Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans marketing. My role involves ensuring all of our external messaging, media and content is published in a timely and effective manner whilst meeting the needs of those in Scotland living with sight loss. I also plan and execute our large awareness campaigns which are all aimed at helping as many people as possible first of all know of each charity and feel confident to reach out for support should they feel they need it.
How long have you worked here?
I started in July 2022 and it has been extremely fulfilling watching the impact of my work support more people, raise awareness and become more front of mind for more people in Scotland. Every year now, I am excited to develop all of what my team and I do further.
Tell me a bit about your background?
My background is varied, and I have worked in multiple different sectors which has enabled me to bring lots of different experiences and marketing techniques to this role. I also love generating new ideas to help drive our marketing efforts forward.
My background is what's known as through-the-line marketing so I have a really good understanding and working knowledge of digital, print, media, press through to large scale national campaign planning and execution. All this feeds into the strategy I develop every year with my fabulous team.
Nothing cements purpose more than having a chinwag with a veteran or helping a Sight Scotland service user out on location or seeing the pupils at The Royal Blind School have such a fantastic time in an environment perfectly suited to their needs.

Tell me about your job?
When I say I cover all aspects of marketing across all the services on offer for both charities, I really do. My team and me are so passionate, it's so fulfilling to have such a wonderful team around me. We also work closely with the fundraising and policy teams to make sure we get all those good messages out there.
I plan out what our team does to make sure all our fantastic work gets shared whilst overseeing and working with my team on the large campaigns you may spot on TV and radio, the website, social media, our printed and digital publications, email marketing and press and media for both charities, as well as supporting The Scottish Braille Press.
What do you love about your job?
Marketing is a really deadline driven role and as a marketing manager I am constantly on that conveyor belt of content creation and strategic planning, and the service users are always at the forefront of my mind in any marketing decisions I make. But, what’s even more special, is that I am able to spend time with service users, get to know them and their story. Nothing cements purpose more than having a chinwag with a veteran or helping a Sight Scotland service user out on location or seeing the pupils at The Royal Blind School have such a fantastic time in an environment perfectly suited to their needs.
Tell me about your plans for the future?
Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans are in a fantastic position to make even more change and benefit people living with sight loss’ lives. The amount of passion from all employees to help, support and make lives better is palpable and is at the core of what we do. For my role, my job is to communicate the right messages for each service element to the audiences we need to talk to most. I am so excited for the future of both the organisations and what fantastic content, communications and impact we can make with our marketing and communication efforts.
It is unique working for such long standing charities. Few people will know that Sight Scotland is 230 years old in 2023 and Sight Scotland Veterans has been around since 1915. Both charities are so special, it's hard not to fall in love with what I do.
