One in five people will start to live with sight loss in their lifetime.

You can help them get the support they need in this life-changing moment.

Freda's Story

I’m Freda (people call me Mouse), and I want to share how Sight Scotland has been there for me throughout my life.

Watch the video here of Freda and Tam's story, or scroll down to read more about Freda's journey with Sight Scotland below.

I was born blind, and at just five years old, I attended the Royal Blind School, run by Sight Scotland. This was a very happy time in my life, I learned all the usual things that other children learn at school, as well as the skills to live independently.

Decades later, when I needed support again, Sight Scotland was there for me.

In my late 60s, I still cherished my independence, but I was no longer able to easily go out alone. I couldn’t use my long cane due to nerve damage in my fingers, and with all the street furniture, bins, new bus stops and low kerbs, it became increasingly difficult. I decided to get back in touch with Sight Scotland, and they were there for me just like they were 60 years earlier.

Sight Scotland introduced me to Tam, a volunteer befriender who has been visiting me every Tuesday for the last two and half years. We go for walks, have a coffee, enjoy a chat and have become good friends. His support has been life-changing – it keeps me connected to my community and living life on my terms.

This long-standing support is only possible because of people like you. Sight Scotland is there to answer every call because of our incredible donors. Every gift makes a difference and will help them be here today and in years to come.

Sight Scotland’s Community Team supports people who are blind or partially sighted every day. For some, a simple piece of equipment, like an electronic magnifier to help with reading at home, can be life-changing. For others, support with benefits or signposting to activity classes like Blind Yoga will make a real difference to their quality of life.

A donation of £60 can cover the cost of essential equipment like a magnifier or a liquid level indicator, two items helping to keep people safe and independent.

The need is urgent. The Team answers thousands of calls every year. With over two hundred years of experience, Sight Scotland has the expertise, commitment and passion to support them, but they need your help.

The need is urgent.

Please take a few minutes to donate today and help them answer the next call.

For over two hundred years, Sight Scotland has been changing lives. With your help, they’ll be there for generations to come. Thank you for being part of this journey with me.

With gratitude,

Freda (Mouse) Steel
